Crochet lion amigurumi – Pattern (Free)

Hello crochet lion,

Rawr! I’m made this little guy for my adorable little nephew. Not sure if he’d appreciate a plush toy, but I know for sure that if he had a spirit animal lion would be it. So here’s my pattern for this lovely little toy.

Measure:

Height: 21cms.
Crochet hook size: 2.5mm
Yarn : 2 skeins of light brown coloured acrylic yarn
1 skein of dark brown coloured yarn
1 skein of white colored yarn

Pattern notes:

The pattern is worked in continuous rounds without joining at the end of each round. The semi colon between rounds indicates similar pattern is to be followed for the rounds between them. The mane is rooted*.
Rooted:
Follow the pattern under mane for the mane cap. To make the hair like appearance for the mane, cut yarn to strips of desired length to be worked into almost every sc on the mane cap. Fold the yarn in half; make a knot similar to the larks head knot in macramé into the mane cap.

Eyes:
Using black colored yarn,
Magic circle, chain 1, 6sc in the circle. Join.
Make two of these and sew it onto the head.
Then thread white colored yarn to a needle and make a single stitch on it so that it appears like the light reflecting through his eyes.
Do the same for both eyes.
Now thread the yarn used for his body to a needle and make parallel stitches(like satin stitch in embroidery), covering quarter of his eyes. These should appear like the eyelid, almost making him a droopy eyed lion.

Tail:

Using tan colored yarn
Magic circle, chain 1, 6sc into the circle. Make several rounds of 6sc till your desired length. Make a 2sc increase for the next two rows and finish off. Sew the tail to the body. Root little strips brown colored yarn to the end of his tail.

Hi, How big should the wig cap be when compared to the head? I believe mine came out to small. I used the same hook and stiches but it barely covers the head of the lion. I just wanted to know if thats right or not

(oh goodness I dont know if my first comment sent) Hi, Im loving this pattern but i’ve run into a snag. The mane cap seems to small in comparison with the lion’s head. I used the same hook size and followed the pattern to a T but the end result is a little cap that barely fits over the top of the lion’s head. I dont know if this is right or not

Hi Kat, the mane cap should fit snugly on the lions head. If you’ve followed the pattern, I’m not sure where else it went wrong. It’s been a while since I’ve done it. Can someone who has done it already help us out please? Sorry that I couldn’t help you.

My cap came out the same way. Can’t even pull it over the top of the head. Think it’s wrong :/
But the rest of the pattern is beautiful. Love it so much.

I am loving making this for my nephew! I am working on the mane and I noticed it goes from round 8 to 10, is round 9 omitted on purpose? Thank you for all the hard work you did creating such an amazing pattern!

Hi, I’m also confused about the mane cap. Someone commented that row is omitted.Maybe that extra row of sc would help make it a bit larger? Anyone else try this, or have a solution to make it a big bigger? And I’m not sure which way to put the cap on the head. Do the pointy parts go back to front, or side to side? I had a lot of success with the rest of the pattern, but I’m a little stuck here!

I don’t know if my previous comment went through. Did anyone have any luck figuring out the mane? I agree that it turns out way too small. I would think it’s supposed to fit like like winter toque (sorry, Canadian here!) but the one I ended up with looks more like a beret… not sure what to do looking for support!

Khrysten I was wondering the same thing. I’m with you the muzzle looks too big. Right now I’m making all the parts then putting it together. Right now I guess I will figure it out when I go to put him together. Hope you were able to figure out where to put your muzzle.

hi I really like this pattern but I am a little confused at the end of the head and body do you close the tops at 18 sc or do you add more row till you get 6 sc then close

    • Susan Ziolkowski says:

Josephine Blankenship you do not close the head and body. You leave them open at 18 sc. I have a lot of patterns that are open like this. You just sew the head on top of the body.
